Shattuck Reading Support is open to 7th and 8th grade students. This class requires a referral from a principal, counselor, teacher, reading specialist, or parent. This class is designed as an intervention course for students struggling in reading. Students' data is collected from various standardized tests and the reading specialist will administer the Fountas and Pinnell individual reading inventory. The student's reading level is sought to determine if placement is necessary, and if so, individualized instruction can be planned for the students.
The class format follows that of Reader's Workshop. Most days, the class begins with a word of the day, and that is followed up by a read-aloud/mini-lesson of that day's target skills. Students practice/apply the mini-lesson using text at their level. We try to share via discussion, journaling, or an exit card at the end of the hour.
Students in reading support complete an invidualized learning plan. They identify their goals, the action plan to reach those goals, what success means in achieving those goals, and how their family can help them reach their goals.
Students in reading support are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes every day. Reading both fiction and non-fiction material will benefit students.
Students in reading support can exit the program if goals are met and reading ability and scores increase. Data is collected multiple times during the year. An exit criteria sheet is filled out and the Learning Support Team makes the final decision on dismissal from the program.
