What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (AT) is defined as "any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilities" by federal law. AT assists students in achieving their IEP goals through the use of specialized devices and software. AT may be implemented in order for students to access the curriculum, improve verbal and/or written communication, access a computer, or control their environment. 

High Tech vs. Low Tech

Specialized devices used with students with Assistive Technology needs may include either high tech devices, low tech devices, or a combination of both. High tech devices include electronics, software, and computers. Low tech devices are operated manually. Low tech devices are typically not as expensive as high tech devices and may be man made; however, low tech devices can be just as or more effective for students depending upon their individual skills and needs.
