Lesson plans and materials for the sixth grade human growth and development curriculum were approved by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its August 21 meeting.
Some members of the Board expressed concern about the gender identity portions of the curriculum, but in the end, the recommendation passed by a 5-3 vote. The Board also had discussion about making sure families are clearly communicated with how to opt their students out of particular lessons.
A first draft of the 2018-19 budget was also presented. Board member Christopher Kunz provided concerns that the initial draft was well over budget and the potential implications. Some Board members also discussed the addition of a large number of new staff members this year and its impact on the budget. There was also discussion about holding off on some facilities maintenance projects until the facilities study is completed.
In action items, the Board approved several hires. Brittany Anderson was hired at Wilson, Nancy Burke-Brzoski at Spring Road, Rebecca Cima-Bardoszy at Alliance, Emily Diggins at Clayton, Molly Hungerford at Horace Mann, Jeana Johnson at Hoover, Angela Macho at Lakeview and Tonya Vanevenhoven at Taft. Cindy Keberlein was renewed for a one-year appointment at Wilson. Eiton Maoz was hired as an educational assistant at Clayton, while Cameron Melzer was selected as an educational assistant at Hoover. Sharayah Preman was chosen for fill an administrative assistant position at the high school.
The Board also approved policies in regards to public requests, suggestions or complaints.
Dr. Mike Altekruse and high school counselor Chris Christensen provided an overview of the District’s mental health and substance abuse prevention programs.
The next meeting is set for Sept. 4.
