Roosevelt and Alliance Elementary Schools partnered with Georgia-Pacific for a family night of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities on Oct. 15.
The free inaugural event featured 12 stations around the school and students received a journal to record the activities they completed and to enter for the chance to win prizes. Students were also given more ideas to try at home, including websites to help explore further.
Some of the activities included: building a foam rocket for launching, creating a Dixie Cup air cannon to launch pom pons using a blast of air, building an open-ended kaleidoscope, designing a race car out of candy, creating circuits using Play-Do and seeing gummy worms “come alive” under a chemical reaction. High school science teacher Mike Lehman also performed demonstrations of endothermic, exothermic and combustion reactions.
Georgia-Pacific employees helped organize and coordinate the event. The was to increase appreciation and understanding of STEM, create a family event that encourages communications and lifelong learning and promote a connection between parents, children, learning and the school. Georgia-Pacific held a similar event in 2014 at Spring Road Elementary in Neenah. |
