Nearly 500 sixth grade students at Neenah’s Horace Mann Middle School will learn from community members and professionals about using math in every day life during the school’s inaugural Math in Careers Day on Jan. 29.
Behind the vision of the Horace Mann math department teachers and a team of community professionals, math will become the focus of real-life discussion and applications. Students will be divided into groups of 30 and will hear from six different professionals about applying math skills in a wide variety of career fields.
“We want to show students how exciting math is and that what they learn today has a direct link to their future,” Horace Mann teacher Jodi Stanchik said.
The community members will present from 8:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m. The day will be divided into six half-hour sessions with 15 minutes between presentations and time for lunch. So far, professionals in over 20 different career fields have committed to helping with the event.
“There’s no better way to show our students the impact of math on their careers than to let students hear it from professionals firsthand,” Horace Mann teacher Mary Greene said. “Some of our presenters will provide hands-on math opportunities while sharing products, real-life examples, videos, explanations or presentations.”
Some of the career fields expected to be represented at the event include: accounting, physical therapy, carpentry, hair styling, finance, management, urban forestry, veterinary, property appraisal, engineering and music.
