A project that began in the fall of 2014 has assisted numerous families across the Neenah Joint School District with basic household items.
Thanks to many generous donors, which include District staff members, students, clubs, community members and parents, the closet is filled with a wide variety of goods, but is still in need of additional items.
Priority items needed are listed under the “Hot Items” icon in the upper right of the Orbit webpage. Current needs are: pasta, pasta sauce, crackers, family sized canned soups and pastas, canned or individual fruit cups, family portions of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and small sizes of women’s clothing and shoes.
Students and families in need are identified by school counselors and then accompanied to the closet to get items. The closet is filled with personal hygiene items, clothing, school supplies and a limited amount of non-perishable food items
The Orbit also welcomes monetary donations that are tax deductible and partnerships with local businesses. Individuals or businesses are invited to check the list of needs on the website and drop their donations, marked “Orbit” at the high school main Door #3.
This school year there are over 70 families identified as homeless in the Neenah Joint School District and 31 percent of high school students are in the free or reduced lunch program. The Neenah-Menasha Emergency Society and several parents have also assisted in preparing the Orbit.
