A special night of tradition and history will take place Sat., Jan. 3 at the Neenah High School Fieldhouse as all 26 of Neenah’s WIAA state boys basketball tournament teams will be honored.
The event will take place prior to the varsity game against Bay Port and is part of the WIAA state tournament’s 100th anniversary celebration. The WIAA has encouraged all member schools to recognize its past state championship teams in advance of this year’s centennial event.
Players and coaches from past state tournament teams will be honored at approximately 6:45 p.m. prior to tipoff of the varsity game at 7:15 p.m. The day is full of alumni events as former players from all past Neenah teams are invited to participate in an alumni tournament at 9 a.m. All former players and coaches will be honored at halftime and a post-game social will be held in the cafeteria.
Neenah’s 26 tournament appearances rank only behind Superior, which has made 27 appearances, though none since 1974. The Rockets have gone to state in every decade except the 1990’s, including a state runner-up finish last March. Neenah has captured three state championships, winning in 1930, 1975 and 1978. The Rockets had runner-up finishes in 1920, 1939, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1988 and 2014.
Alumni are encouraged to contact classmates who may not be aware of this event. Former players wishing to attend the event are asked to RSVP by e-mailing neenahboysbasketball@gmail.com and indicating their interest.
