A unique event was held for the first time at Neenah High School on Dec. 11 as all students participated in a Career/College Readiness Day.
The day was tailored to fit students from all four grades and was intended to engage students in real-world learning experiences aimed at college and career readiness. The event featured representatives from local colleges, military organizations and companies to show students options for their post-high school years.
“This event is designed to help high school students get from point A to point B,” said Neenah High School principal Brian Wunderlich. “Sometimes it’s possible lose track of the big picture and remember we are preparing students for their life after high school, so the day is intended to show students what choices they have after they leave and how high school can help them get there.”
Students spent the morning rotating among various activities. The day had an early dismissal as teachers had a professional learning in-service during the afternoon.
Seniors and juniors visited the career fair in the cafeteria, filled out a survey about their experience at Neenah High School and watched videos about how to exhibit professionalism. The seniors attended a panel with community leaders to discuss career pathways, while the juniors heard from various college representatives on how to prepare for the application process.
Sophomores were given a tour of the Career and Technical Education areas at the high school, viewing the technical education, business education, art and family/consumer education areas. They also visited the career fair and heard from upperclass students about navigating a successful high school experience.
Freshmen spent the day with their freshman seminar classes and also learned about having a successful high school experience while getting some additional learning support as the first semester comes to a close.
All groups watched a video regarding the “Happy Secret to Better Work” and how to find a career and work life in which they enjoy.
The Neenah High School guidance department and administration organized the event. Each staff member was assigned a different group of students to lead through the day.
