Spring Road Elementary and Lakeview Elementary Schools in Neenah have been recognized for their efforts in helping students walk to school with awards by the East Central Wisconsin Safe Routes to School Program.
Spring Road received a Silver Award and Lakeview was recognized with a Bronze Award. A total of 88 schools were honored out of 184 participating schools in an eight-county region.
The program recognizes schools that support and promote safe walking and biking through safety programs, activity tracking and community participation.
Both Spring Road and Lakeview have held walk and bike to school days. Spring Road has a regular “Walk to School Wednesday” program and both schools have proper bike and pedestrian signage near their buildings. The East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission is working to incorporate the program throughout the Neenah Joint School District for 2019-20.
The program focuses on empowering local communities and school districts with the resources and knowledge needed to implement activities. By working to make it safer and more appealing for students to walk and bike to school, the regional program is continually making strides to improve childhood health, reduce traffic congestion and pollution and create more livable communities.
The program encompasses an eight-county region in northeast Wisconsin including Calumet, Fond du Lac, Menominee, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara and Winnebago counties.
