Five students from Alliance Charter School drafted a proclamation that was approved by Governor Tony Evers declaring Feb. 24-March 2 Montessori Education Week in Wisconsin.
The week has been previously recognized in other states and countries, but is being observed in Wisconsin for the first time. Students Zaid Alhuraishi, Evelyn Eichman, Hope Geiger, Sophie Stachurski and Jenny VanHandel looked at other proclamations as examples and then wrote their own for Wisconsin. They also drafted an explanation of Montessori education and contacted the governor’s office in January.
The students, who are fourth and fifth graders under teachers Stephanie Markman and Virginia Peters, received the formal acceptance last week in time for the state’s first Montessori Education Week. The Wisconsin Montessori Association has promoted the week to Montessori schools statewide.
Alliance Charter School was founded in 2004 and serves about 125 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The school is located in the Roosevelt Elementary building.
