The Neenah Joint School District has received an $88,600 grant to develop special education teachers for the next two years.
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development awarded the District a Wisconsin Fast Forward Teacher Training and Development Grant to train up to eight teachers in an area with a statewide shortage.
“Finding special education teachers has been a challenge for districts across the state,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Pfeiffer. “We are thankful for this assistance as it will assist us in expanding our current program as well as increase the number of teachers in the special education area.”
In total, $3,553,622.15 was presented to 32 school districts to license more than 370 teachers in various academic areas. The grant is available for throughout 2019 and 2020 and will cover all tuition expenses for teachers to attend weekend classes.
The grant will be used to develop District teachers currently teaching in other subject areas as well as external candidates. While completing the courses, teachers will be able to work under an emergency license before achieving the requirements to eventually become fully licensed in special education.
