Three grants have been awarded to Neenah Joint School District staff members through the 2018 Vera and Carol Tipler Awards.
Two winners were selected for the Vera Tipler Award, which rewards teachers in grades 4K-8 who are seeking innovative approaches to elementary teaching and learning. Horace Mann special education teacher Michelle Marchionda was awarded a grant to provide different types of filaments and colors for a 3D printer. Marchionda’s students use the printer on a daily basis for problem solving with their school coffee shop, including printing reusable sleeves to replace the more expensive disposable versions. Lakeview fourth grade teacher Alisia Myers was awarded a grant to assist in building a creation station in her classroom that is filled with activities for the students to build, create, problem solve and explore. The materials will emphasize assistance in STEM and coding activities.
The Carol Tipler Award gives up to $500 and is open to teachers in grades 4K-5 to enable students to experience an activity to supplement their education that would not be possible without the grant. The award was presented to Taft fourth grade teacher Michelle Robb for the purchase of a hydroponics unit in her classroom. Students will be taught about gardening, vegetables and hydroponics. The grant request was submitted by high school teacher Emily Bennett, who will install the unit along with students from the high school Arete Academy.
Vera and Carol Tipler were both teachers in the Neenah Joint School District and had a passion for watching students make new discoveries. The Vera Tipler Award began in 1996 and the Carol Tipler Award was established in 2009.
