Neenah Joint School District Receives Second School Safety Grant
< Back
The Neenah Joint School District has received a $379,852 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice to support school safety efforts and mental health training.
The grant is the second awarded to the District by the Department of Justice this year, having also been awarded $267,079 last June. The most recent round of grants awarded 263 schools and school districts around the state over $21 million.
The second round of grant funding will build upon the physical security improvements made in the first round of grant funding by offering advanced training for teachers on mental health issues. Funds are also available to create local teams of educators, counselors and law enforcement that will assess threats and identify students in need of support. Additional physical security upgrades will also be funded.
Neenah will use the recent grant money in three areas. The District will send 10 percent of its staff and 10 administrators to an adolescent mental health training. A group of 10 staff members will participate in a threat assessment training to serve students and staff at the elementary and secondary levels. The District will also remodel entry ways to some of the school buildings to make for more secure entrances. The buildings which will be remodeled have yet to be determined.
