Neenah High School’s tennis courts will be named in honor of longtime boys’ coach Tom Berven following action taken by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its Sept. 4 meeting.
Berven was the team’s head coach for the past 48 years and won 41 conference championships and five state titles. He also led the Neenah Park and Recreation summer program for 51 years and taught social studies at the high school for 34 years. A date for the dedication ceremony will be announced later.
In other action, the Board approved policies in regards to the early college credit program and students taking classes at Fox Valley Technical College. They also adopted a resolution to persuade the state legislature to permit school districts to exceed the revenue limit for mental health related services by creating a new fund.
Several new hires were approved. Alissa Ambroso and Amy Harper will both teach social studies at Shattuck and Harper will also teach at the high school. Joanna Dane was hired as an academic assistant at the high school and Sara Verhage will be a sign interpreter at Washington. Educational assistants that were approved were Maggie Kilgas at Spring Road, Kelly King at Clayton, Anne Marsh at the high school, Taylor Pierce at Coolidge and Erika Payne at Taft.
Former teacher and coach Jim Piepenbrink was honored for his 54 seasons of coaching in the District. Piepenbrink recently retired after 30 seasons with the baseball program, including 11 as head coach.
The next meeting is set for Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Administration Building.
