The lesson materials for the sixth grade human growth and development curriculum were reviewed by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its August 7 meeting.
The materials will be voted upon at the next meeting on August 21. Board members lauded much of the work and focused the majority of their discussion on the gender identity portion of the materials. Many Board members indicated they did not approve of the use of the “Genderbread Man” example for teachers. They also asked for better sources of the information and wanted materials that were intended solely for teachers to be better identified.
The Board also reviewed the academic standards for the upcoming year. Board members asked questions to gain more historical perspective of the standards.
In action items, the Board approved the Code of Conduct for students participating in high school activities. Changes were made from the previous presentation to better reflect all activities instead of athletics and update all references from “co-curricular” to “extra-curricular.” A certified staff salary schedule was also approved that eliminates the District level Impact category from the 2017 schedule. It also increases the salary maximums for building level impact from $70,000 to $80,000 and the classroom level impact from $65,000 to $70,000.
New hires approved include Chelsea Schumann as a high school English teacher, Tanner Freund as a physical education teacher at Horace Mann and Shattuck, Quinn Leisgang as a social worker at Shattuck, Bethany Nieft as a literacy coach at Hoover and Melissa Patton Eaglin as an educational assistant at the high school. Immediate resignations were approved for Lakeview teacher Erin Higgins, Hoover teacher Amy McDonald, Clayton educational assistant Traci Lyle and high school library assistant Amy Pritzl.
