Polling places will be removed from all school buildings following the Nov. 6, 2018 election following action by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its May 1 meeting.
The Board’s decision includes a provision that Nov. 6 will be a non-instructional day for students. Administration will determine the exact structure of that day. Elections are held at Hoover, Roosevelt, Shattuck, Spring Road and Wilson.
The Board also reviewed changes to the Employee Policy Manual for the 2018-19 school year. Many of the proposed changes reflected current practices already in place. The primary changes brought forward involve personal leave. Staff members will receive $100 for each unused personal day. The changes also eliminate the use of personal leave during the first five and last five instructional days of the year and set a maximum of 15 personal days on any given day by all staff who need a substitute. Employees who retire with other post-employment benefits (OPEB) or those who resign at age 55 with at least 10 years of service to the District will have access to the Health and Wellness Center along with their spouses and adult dependents. Employees must also work a full year to qualify for OPEB with the year defined as starting on the first day that certified staff work in August. All of the proposed changes will be voted upon at the next meeting on May 15.
In other action, certified staff contracts were approved for the 2018-19 school year. Contracts for administrators were also extended through the 2020 school year. Hires were approved for Amanda Albrecht as technology coach, Jill Meixl as a teacher at Neenah High School and Sadie Schlafer as a teacher at Coolidge. Amy Pritzl resigned as a library media specialist at Taft and Wilson and has been hired as an educational assistant in the Neenah High School library. Other resignations were approved for Spring Road teacher Kristen Burger, Horace Mann and Shattuck teacher Stephanie Schott, Washington teacher Hli Xiong Weigman and Lakeview educational assistant Wendy Meyer, effective June 4. Shattuck operations staffer Douglas Schultz has resigned, effective May 19.
Senior students Michael Sattler and Jamie Rose were recognized as School Board scholarship recipients and juniors Jackson Vendola and David Xiao were honored for their perfect 36 scores on the recent ACT exam.
The Board welcomed new members Brian Epley and Carol Hollar-Zwick and selected officers for the upcoming year. All four officers will retain their positions with Michelle Swardenski as president, Jean Maurice Boyer as vice president, Christopher Kunz as treasurer, Betsy Ellenberger as clerk and Diane Haug as secretary.
An open forum lasted over an hour with 20 speakers. Most spoke about the voting in schools, while several other parents in the Lakeview boundary expressed concern about their students not being able to attend kindergarten at the school this fall.
