A discussion regarding the removal of voting in school buildings headlined the April 17 meeting of the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education.
The administration recommended that the City of Neenah and Village of Fox Crossing find alternate sites for election day beginning in November. Most of the Board members’ comments were in agreement with the recommendation, but asked for examples of policies from other districts. Neenah mayor Dean Kaufert spoke in open forum against the proposal, stating that having children see the election process is important and that police officers are currently stationed at all polling places. A vote will be taken on the proposal at the next meeting on May 1.
The Board approved two additional special education teaching positions and two educational assistant positions in special education due to approximately 24 new special education referrals. The additions are anticipated to cost $190,000.
In other action, hires were approved for Tess Engelland as a teacher at Coolidge and Kristen Nickles as a family consumer education teacher at Shattuck. End-of-year resignations were approved for middle school library media specialist Heather Hansen, Wilson literacy coach Cynthia Keberlein, music teacher Gary Lemieux and Spring Road cross categorical teacher Joelle Maxfield.
The Board recognized John Lehman for 19 years of service to the Board and John Van Meter for his term over the past three years. Dr. Pfeiffer also recognized the Employee of the Year and Celebration of Teaching award winners that will be honored on April 25.
