A presentation on target-based grading consumed the majority of the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education meeting on March 20.
District-level staff members Susan Nennig and Curtis Bartlett led a discussion to explain the process and benefits of target-based learning. A number of teachers have been implementing the process in recent years and full District implementation is planned for the fall of 2019. Chad Buboltz, Scott Hertting and Kevin Feick represented the high school; Stephanie Phernetton, Kyle Popp and Cheryl Prosek represented Shattuck; and Jackie Munoz-Ellmann, Tricia Retzlaff and Karen Hovie spoke about Horace Mann.
Several Board members expressed concern over seeing the information for the first time this deep into the process. The presentation lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. It was for information purposes and no action was taken by the Board.
In action items, the Board approved a change to the 2019 school calendar, moving the February Professional Learning Day up one week from Feb. 25 to Feb. 18. The move will accommodate a regional professional learning conference with other CESA 6 schools that Neenah has been selected to host.
The Board also approved hires for Emily Gauthier as an intellectual/cognitive disability teacher at Spring Road and Chelsea Nigbur as a speech/language pathologist at Hoover.
Neenah High School senior Beau Yineman was honored by the Board for his recently completed undefeated state championship wrestling season.
The next meeting is set for April 3 at 6 p.m.
