The 2018-19 staffing proposal and budget framework were presented to the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its Feb. 20 meeting.
Much of the staffing proposal discussion centered around the proposed elimination of three elementary Library Media Specialist positions in order to add a technology coach and four educational assistants to provide library support at a neutral cost. Several individuals spoke in open forum against the proposal and the Board asked a number of questions to understand the reasons for the changes throughout the discussion. The other primary changes that were discussed included an additional elementary counselor position, a new Transitional Learning Coordinator at Shattuck and an additional fifth grade teacher at Clayton. The proposal will be voted upon at the next meeting on March 6.
The budget framework is a long-range forecast for the upcoming year with variables ranging from state aid amounts to enrollments and insurance costs. If the budget looks similar as projected, the mill rate would drop for the fifth time in six years, falling another 23 cents to $7.52 and remain the lowest in the area. Once again, the budget includes a 2 percent allocation for staff salaries and a 1.5 percent distribution for staff stipends. The Budget also provides over $2 million for both technology purchases and capital maintenance projects.
In staff changes, the Board approved the hire of Karen Duren as an elementary literacy coach and the resignation of Washington teacher Rachele Carney, effective March 4.
Neenah High School senior Evan Arnold was honored as the state high school winner of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his volunteer efforts. Mike Jansen from Prudential attended the meeting and presented Evan with a medallion.
