The Velocity program at Shattuck Middle School was one of only two schools in Wisconsin and one of 32 nationwide to receive an Ascend Gold Medal for its implementation of an online math intervention program.
The award was established in 2010 to honor schools or districts that best demonstrate a dedication to ensuring that all students become successful at math. Shattuck has been using Ascend Math, an intensive online math intervention program to assist struggling students. The Ascend Math program has improved math results for reluctant learners and at-risk students in the Velocity program.
At the end of the third quarter, 4 percent of students in the program had D's or F's in math, compared with 33 percent of the group at the same time last year.
Ascend Math is math intervention that provides each student with a unique study path through skill gaps at each level. Individual study plans are prescriptive, adaptive, and automatically assigned. In addition, Ascend Math provides all the interactive instruction each student needs. Students using Ascend fill skill gaps quickly and often improve one to two grade levels the first few months. Real time data makes progress monitoring easy and gives teachers a quick snapshot on what needs to happen next.
Ascend Math is written to rigorous state standards. Instruction is delivered in a logical math sequence and students can progress at their own pace and track their own progress and success.
The Mercer School District was the only other Wisconsin district to earn the award.
