Neenah captured its first WIAA state girls volleyball championship since 1978 with a three-set sweep of Burlington on Nov. 5 at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
The Rockets were making their 14th trip to state and sixth appearance in the title match. Neenah won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-10. The Rockets scored the last five points of the first set and opened the third set with an 11-2 run.
Neenah finished the season 46-4 and won 28 of its last 29 matches. The Rockets avenged their only loss during that span by beating FVA rival Appleton North in a five-set thriller in the quarterfinals. They followed with a sweep of Sun Prairie in the semifinals.
The Rockets converted on a .347 hitting percentage for the match. Addie Barnes posted 13 kills and Hope Werch added 12 kills to pace the Rockets. Mikayla Butts dished out a match-high 42 assists to direct the Rockets’ attack.
