Wilson Elementary School PTO
PTO is a great vehicle for parental involvement. Because of our amazing families and staff, our PTO volunteers come together to accomplish great things. We need volunteers to help with family activities, like our fall festival dance and winter carnival, as well as activities in the classroom – everything from Room Parents to Field Trip Chaperones and everything in between. By coming to our monthly PTO meetings, you will get monthly updates from our principal, get information on district-wide issues and join in discussions that directly impact Wilson. And if you have ideas for new initiatives or improvements we can make, we’d love to hear from you. As a family member of a Wilson student, you are automatically a member of our PTO so come and have your voice heard.
PTO meetings will generally be held the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the school library. Our first PTO meeting will be held Tuesday, September 13. We’ll be introducing the new PTO officers, discussing upcoming events, and answer any questions you may have. Free childcare, provided by middle-school students, will be available in the cafeteria for our first meeting on Sept. 13.
See you at school!

WILSON ELEMENTARY PTO VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Wilson Elementary PTO provides many opportunities to get involved in your child’s education. Parental involvement really does influence student motivation and achievement. In addition, the PTO is a forum to voice your opinion, connect with other Wilson families, and support our teachers. PTO committees are described below. Considering your interests & talents, please check off the committees in which you are interested on the last page.
COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS
-
ACTIVITIES – Do you love to have fun? Plan monthly or every-other-month family activities for our school community (excluding the dance and carnival). Skatenights, Movie Morning at Fox Cinema and a Funset Blvd night are just a few of the activities we currently sponsor. Step into these activities which are already established or come up with your own ideas for Wilson families to get together and have fun!
-
BOOK WORMS – Our Wilson students love to read! And the PTO loves to encourage our readers by providing support for the teachers’ Guided Reading Room and the library as well as coordinating a book exchange in the spring.
-
CARNIVAL– Held the last Saturday in February, the carnival is a great activity to beat the winter blahs. At least a dozen games are available for the kids to play and our basket raffle is both a big fundraiser and a great place to pick up some amazing things for your home. The carnival committee has 3 areas you can help in: Games & Volunteer coordination, Food, and the Basket Raffle. This event takes A LOT of volunteers to pull off. We hope you’ll consider joining in for a great time of family fun!!
-
ENRICHMENT– BRING THE ARTS TO WILSON!!! This committee brings an artist or author into the school to promote the arts. The committee identifies an artist or author and then partners with them to plan and organize an event to promote the artistic development of our students.
-
FALL FESTIVAL DANCE – The fall festival dance, held the second-to-last Friday in October, is a Wilson tradition! As a family activity, parents and kids are encouraged to dress up and dance the night away. Concessions are also available for sale. This annual event is a great way to get involved as all activities can be done outside of school day hours.
-
FIELD DAY – Each summer, just before school lets out, the PTO sponsors a day of wet & wild fun. With up to eight different stations, our kids get wet playing games like Slip-N-Slide Tug o’ War and Duck-Duck-Splash! This committee will need lots of volunteers to make the day a success.
-
FLOWER POWER – Do you have a green thumb? We have a number of flower beds around the school that could use a little TLC.
-
FUNDRAI$ING – Help with one or more of the fundraising activities that make PTO enrichment programs possible: label redemption (Box Tops, milk caps and soup labels), Entertainment Book sales and the spring pizza sale.
-
GIVING GOBBLER –The PTO sponsors a food drive for Thanksgiving meals for the many families who could use a little extra help during the holiday season. All donations directly benefit Wilson students and their families. This committee would coordinate the drive and shop for any last-minute items not provided through the drive.
-
NOMINATING COMMITTEE – Research potential candidates for PTO Executive Board positions.
-
OPEN HOUSE – WELCOME BACK!! We have a great event planned for our Open House, but we need your help to make it a success. Volunteer to help grill or serve food or help with set-up or clean-up.
-
PICKLES & POPCORN – Most Tuesdays during the school year, we sell popcorn to the students for a snack. Volunteers can make and bag popcorn or collect orders from the classrooms. Time commitment is only about an hour after school starts and you can help as often as weekly or as infrequently as monthly. In addition, pickles are sold one Thursday per month using the same procedure. It’s a great way to get to know other parents, see our classrooms in action and enjoy a yummy treat!
-
ROOM PARENTS – Each classroom needs a room parent or two to plan each of the three classroom parties: Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day and to coordinate a holiday gift for the teacher.
-
SOCCER COORDINATOR – Each fall Wilson students in grades 1-5 have the opportunity to participate in soccer in a low-cost, low-intensity setting. Open to all students of all ability levels, we need a few volunteers to work with the city coordinator to get students registered, T-shirts ordered, coaches and referees assigned and be the go-to person for coach questions. Season is 8-weeks and finished by the end of October. Registration is held in May.
-
TEACHER APPRECIATION – We love our Wilson teachers and staff and want to show them our appreciation, during national Teacher Appreciation Week in May as well as during conferences by providing them with lunch. This committee plans and coordinates all events during the week, including gifts and luncheons for teachers.
