Neenah Captures Special Olympics State Basketball Championship

Neenah High School’s Special Olympics basketball team captured a state championship by winning its division at the state indoor sports tournament on April 12 in Oshkosh.
The Rockets beat Fort Atkinson in the championship game 28-18 on Sunday after defeating West Racine County 44-20 in the semifinal round of Division 9 on Saturday. The team qualified for state at a sectional meet in Stevens Point on March 15 by rallying from a halftime deficit to beat West Madison 20-14 and then getting past Cuba City 34-27. The team won its regional on March 1 in Sheboygan with a 29-6 victory over Sheboygan.
Team members are Lyle Julian, Chris Jones, Dominic Doucette, Sam Moder, Ryan Young, Daniel Grassi and Brittany Wendler. In addition, Tre Swinford collected a silver medal and Ben Johnson won a bronze medal in the basketball skills competition.
The team is coached by Chad Oeftger and Robin Grable. Neenah is one of a select few school districts in the state of Wisconsin to sponsor its own Special Olympics team. Neenah students also typically compete in bowling, swimming and diving, track and field and softball.
