Four grants have been awarded to NJSD staff members through the Vera and Carol Tipler Awards.
Three winners were selected for the Vera Tipler Award, which gives up to $700 to teachers in grades 4K-8 who are seeking innovative approaches to elementary teaching and learning. Shattuck teacher Cindy Riha won for a plan to enhance a small coffee business at Shattuck through her Connecting with Careers class. Tullar teacher Debbie Burmeiester was awarded a grant to create a recording studio for students to answer thought provoking questions using technology. Shattuck teachers Jeff Ferge, Samathan Johnson, Grace Kuehl and Andrew Simon won a grant for a virtual field trip to the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum during the spring.
The Carol Tipler Award gives up to $500 and is open to teachers in grades 4K-5 to enable students to experience an activity to supplement their education that would not be possible without the grant. The award was presented to Tullar teacher Kassandra Beno for a field trip to the Oshkosh Public Museum to visit the "People of the Waters" exhibit about Native American culture.
Vera and Carol Tipler were both teachers in the Neenah Joint School District and had a passion for watching students make new discoveries. The Vera Tipler Award began in 1996 and the Carol Tipler Award was established in 2009.
