Math teachers from around the state are spending time in the classrooms of Neenah High School this summer as part of the Wisconsin Statewide Mathematics Initiative.
About 200 teachers, including 25 from the Neenah Joint School District, are taking part in the five-day event July 14-18. The WSMI has two goals: to deepen mathematical content knowledge and to develop leadership capacity. Teachers are gaining a deeper understanding of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics in the initiative, which was developed through cooperation of the Wisconsin Mathematics Council, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Higher Education and K-12 schools.
Teachers were split into seven different groups based on grade level and different functions of math. This week’s program is one of five held throughout the state this summer with others in Wales, Butternut, Wausau and Verona. This year is the first time Neenah has hosted the event, which is in its third year.
The WSMI was developed by the non-profit Brookhill Institute of Mathematics as a professional development opportunity for math teachers throughout the state. In addition to networking opportunities, teachers have access to various resources offered by the WSMI and many of the newest math teaching methods.
