Another banner athletics season with nine Fox Valley Association championships and six teams qualifying for state tournaments helped Neenah place fifth in the large schools division of the Wisconsin Sports Network Cup, which recognizes the state’s top overall athletic programs.
It marks the fifth straight year Neenah has placed in the top 10 and its second straight year among the top five after finishing third in 2012-13.
Points are awarded based on finishes in WIAA state tournament competition with a maximum 100 points given to the state champion school in each respective sport. The top 32 teams in each sport earn points. Neenah finished with 491 points, while Arrowhead won the cup for the seventh straight year by scoring 764 points and holding off Middleton by less than three points. Kimberly was third with 595 points and Eau Claire Memorial was fourth with 528.83 points.
Neenah had eight teams place in the top 10 in their respective sport, led by the boys basketball team’s runner-up finish. Girls cross country placed third and girls volleyball tied for third by reaching the state semifinals. Girls basketball, girls tennis and boys tennis all advanced to the state quarterfinals, while girls track and field placed sixth and boys golf placed ninth.
The Rockets qualified teams or individuals for WIAA state tournament competition in 12 different sports. Neenah’s nine FVA championships were the most of any school as Kimberly was second with seven conference titles.
